It is said that today’s technology is desensitizing mankind and causing people to lose empathy. But is it really? Televisions and computers were invented in the early 1900’s and later popularized in the mid to late 1900’s. Man’s brutality and consciencelessness has far preceded the technological age.
From the 1400’s to the 1800’s a ghastly amount of people were savagely tortured during the Spanish Inquisition because they would not yield to the Catholic religion. Over 6,000 people were murdered. In the 1600’s the Salem Witch Trials took place in which 19 people were convicted of witchcraft and publically executed. It is believed that a case of teenage boredom had also swept the town.
At least in the case of America, with the incline in political correctness and the rise of eco-friendly and protective organizations, I am inclined to deduce that we are in fact a more sensitive society in this technological era.
