This painting was made out of an impulse of wanting to create something "golden" without actually being golden. I wanted it to be a cheerful, youthful yellow, but at the same time I wanted the lines of the peony to be seen through it.
While painting it I remember having this feeling of happiness while observing the colours of the background as they were "growing" out, and at the same time I was able to envision this kind of golden flower as a singular, as if the background wasn't yellow or golden but inexistent behind the peony.

Also, I have to say that I wasn't quite happy with the second flower in the lower left corner, but somehow the big peony in bloom managed to eclipse the second one (hence the name) which made me feel much more secure about this painting.
I'll also add that I struggle too much with "perfection" so having this last thought relieved me from that bit of anxiety.
