Alberta which has long prospered from oil resources, so has been the major contributor to these federal equalization payments. Despite being per capital the wealthiest province, Alberta’s government makes no fiscal adjustments to compensate for recurring oil market dips. These downturns, make equalization a hard pill to swallow.
