The remains of the 1830s era cabin can be found on the north bank of the Walla Walla River, 22 miles before it joins the Columbia, on Lapwai Creek, 2 miles before it joins the Clearwater River. The land was home to about 400 Native Americans of the Cayuse band of the Nez Perce tribe when Henry H. Spaulding (1803-1874), built the cabin as his home, moving there to serve as a missionary on what would become a station on the old Oregon trail.
