While taking a car trip along the California coastline, we stopped to see this iconic landmark. I could see why the view of this tree is so popular. Year after year it defies the storms and heat and stands strong all by itself. A good life lesson for all of us.

The textures in the rocks contrasted with the gentle waves in the ocean that day. The thought of exploring them in detail with oil paint and a palette knife called to me. Many layers were used, and time was allowed for them to dry before adding the next, especially on the rocks. I love the way the colors come through from each layer and mix on the eyes.
