Down East weather is predictable over the long haul. You build from the natural resources cedar trees that are abundant, and the shingled sides of the house and panels of the sheds are a light brown-red. Light, new and they smell good too. Sometimes as the years go by, they are painted 'to spruce up the place.' More years pass, the shingles change, the paint chips off and the shingles turn light gray and then morph into darker versions with green and dark brown to slate brown and as they age. They warp and become uneven. Spring comes each year bringing with it Queen Ann's lace, bitter Yellow Yarrow, and a hard economic reality.
In the time of COVID so many of the older Lobster Pounds are affected with no out of State visitors coming to "Vacationland" to indulge in the natural beauty of the coastal area and bounty from the sea.
I chose to paint the dilapidation of the struggling seamen and women who work in the industry and the proud spirit of the people of Maine
