This mysterious abstract acrylic painting on canvas is actually based on a photograph. I've spent a lot of time around the base of the Saddlehorn Formation in the Colorado National Monument studying the shapes of the eroded red sandstone and the play of light on the cliffs. I've always enjoyed the relationship between "realism" and "abstraction." I find it just a matter of point of view. From the air or up close, an absolutely photographic landscape becomes abstract. This series includes digital photographs as well as paintings. I don't try to make the paintings photorealistic. That would be a duplication of effort. In the paintings, I allow the medium to have its way, adding an emotional dimension.
