The young Rowbotham traveled frequently to complete studies in various locations, providing him with an awareness and knowledge of the subject matter that could only be attained through first-hand experience. Painting en-plein air was another Impressionist tradition that was adopted by the burgeoning painter. Charles Rowbotham is known for his use of an opaque white pigment, often referred to as body-color, in his watercolors. This technique renders them in an unnaturally brilliant light and colorful appearance that earned him a consistently prestigious place in exhibitions and museums across the globe.
