Originally from California, (but a now converted Dallasite) 24-year-old J.R. Nuzum spends most of his time dreaming and letting the paint do the scheming, and as a surrealist painter- you could kind of say that’s his job. By bending and blurring the lines of fiction and reality, J.R. is doing what he does best; he’s whispering a series of spontaneous adventures, tucking you in, and bringing you into the dream- all with a flick of a brush. J.R.’s romance with surrealism began brewing where most of our first dreams were conjured- at a desk in the middle of math lessons. He attempts to hold back a laugh as he recalls the days of the drool-soaked sanctuaries, “back in school I always tuned out the teacher and would be sketching little adventures in my notebook”. By 5th grade, Nuzum began dropping the pencils and stensils to add color to his other-worldly realms. His style is reminiscent of the dreams that we forgot we had as children, mixed in with the more mature undertones that overshadowed adolescence. As premeditated and deliberate as that may sound, J.R. reminds us that much of his work isn’t, “Sometimes it goes off of an emotion or an idea, but a lot of the time I do a few random strokes of the brush or just splatters of the paint” he says, “ I let the art kind of evolve on its own” -Greg Arellano
