Gourdaments by Devon Cameron in Middletown, NYwww.ArtPal.com/gourdaments
I have been looking around in so many corners of life to find my calling. I have a BS in Music Therapy and I worked in that area for awhile. Being dyslexic and wanting to encourage children to love to learn, I went on to get my Master's Degree in Special Education. I worked in that area for awhile while raising my two wonderful children. In between I have been an interpreter of history at a Museum, wrote grants for respite programs for children with autism, directed an Adult Day Program, but always, always, I go back to working with gourds. Maybe it is because every gourd is different, or that mother nature is my partner, or maybe it is the rich and diverse concept of a gourd. When I think of a gourd, I think "individual", and when I think of the artwork, I think "individual", and when I sell my artwork to a customer I again think "individual"!
My gourds have won many awards. My work has been on the cover of Gift Shop Magazine and feathered in many local papers and publications. I owned a gallery in Sugar Loaf, NY where I taught classes on making gourd birdhouses, gourd creatures, etc. At one point I wholesaled my work to over 500 shops and galleries, including The Smithsonian and Art Institute of Chicago gift shops. I do shows throughout the tri-state area during the Spring and Fall season.
All of my gourds come from an Amish farmer in Lancaster County, PA. What a treat it is to go to the barn and pick out the various gourd shapes!
