Born in Aparecida, São Paulo in October 1955.
Painter, designer, illustrator, writer, sculptor, restorer and Professor of Fine Arts. Started within the artistic field in 1968, when he was a student of renowned sculptor Teixeira Machado. Even at that time, Gilberto lived with high level painters like Theodoro Meirelles, José Roberto Santos, Chico Santeiro and Oswaldo Teixeira. Later in Bahia, where he lived for 14 years, attended the workshops of great artists like Karl Heins Hansen Bahia, João José Rescala, Carlos Bastos, Carybé and Rainer, where Gilberto had the opportunity to absorb specific techniques to improve his work. Later, he was invited to lecture and became a Professor at Federal University of Bahia and State University of Feira de Santana, where he taught painting and drawing techniques. Participated in several exhibitions in Brazil and overseas, belonging to important Brazilian Cultural Entities, like the Paulista Association of Fine Arts and the Brazilian Society of Fine Arts. He is the holder of awards in exhibitions and art salons in Brazil and abroad, having among others, Gold Medal, Medal of Honor, Honorable Mention and Commendation Medal, being one of the most important brazilian artists nowadays. In 2006 after completing 30 years of career, the artist released his biography and works inserted in the book "THE ART OF GILBERTO GOMES" by Alexandre Lourenço Marcos Barbosa, Publisher Nova America, São Paulo, as part of a series of books about great Brazilian Artists like Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti, Adélio Sarro, Cláudio Tozzi, Antonio Peticov, Guignard, Djanira, and Brecheret. Artist of broad and legitimate national and international reputation, having his work cataloged in a wide variety of publications and Arts Dictionaries. The artist has works in private Collections and Archives in over thirty countries, highlighting the Presidential Palace in Brasilia, Federal University of Zaragoza - Spain, Banco Bradesco - New York, Bank of Brazil - Leningrad Foundation, Cultural Munich - Germany, Brazilian Embassy - Argentina, Atelier of the American Painter Gregory Gallo - New York, Regional Museum of Feira de Santana, Brazil, US Cultural Association in Salvador, among other collections. He is the author of the famous work "Frei Galvão, Saint of Our Land". The image has been chosen by the Catholic Church (by the former Pope Joseph Ratzinger) as the official picture of the first brazilian saint, Frei Antônio de Santana Galvão (aka Frei Galvão).
