Born and raised in Seattle to Dutch immigrant parents, I studied art while at university but instead pursued work in the tech world. A Peace Corps assignment brought me to Fiji for 2 years where i met my husband. From there i continued my travels living in China, Australia and Japan before settling here in Chicago. My evolving aesthetic is derived from the cultures I've experienced while abroad (like Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese aesthetic which revolves around impermanence and imperfection). I try to reconcile these with American retro pop culture which, with it's clean lines, fonts and dated portrayal of women, makes an interesting counterbalance. In this series, the paintings are named after Classic works of Haiku (each of which are written in the backs of the art panels).
