Born in Columbus, Ohio, ‘Rick’ Ruark is a self-taught, Pittsburgh contemporary acrylics painter. He began painting after his move to Ft. Lauderdale, FL 35 years ago where he was inspired by the beauty of the landscapes, cultural diversity and architecture of Miami. That inspiration led to diversity in his paintings. After becoming disabled in recent years, his artwork has become a way for him to deal with, and accept these disabilities and further explore his own capabilities in art.
Over the years, Rick has shown his art in various venues in South Florida as well as Pittsburgh, PA. He is currently preparing for a one-man show in Pittsburgh in 2016.
Humor, satire and beauty are all focuses of my art. In creating pieces with this focus, I hope to expand my capabilities and thus offer the results to a wider audience. While some of my works are very conventional, others are quite edgy. I am having fun with it all. While I'm very serious about my art, my subject matter is not necessarily serious.
Everything visual is Rick’s primary influence. There is art in everything he sees, good or bad. The architecture and design of Frank Lloyd Wright, the graphic design and paintings of Peter Max, the farcicalness and humor of Andy Warhol, Franz Kline, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, the Wyeths and Salvador Dali all have major impacts on the way he sees things and hopes to better understand the way they saw things.
