I began this personal challenge to paint 100 poppies in 100 days on August 4th 2014 in honour of the 100th anniversary of First World War. It was also a quest to carve out time in the middle of busy working family life to try and be creative. I often hear myself saying if only I had time to paint and this was my way of seeing if I could make it happen now rather than in some future moment which never seems to come.
It was demanding but exciting to find time to paint every day without exception for 100 days and to try and find a different way to paint a poppy. I found the process a bit like stepping into a dream where I was getting pulled further and further in. It seemed important to write a bit each day as I discovered more about the symbolism of the poppy, and these are the extracts that sit next to each painting.
As the project came closer to remembrance season I found a strong impulse to meditate on the significance of the act of remembrance and how the poppy acts as a portal to facilitate this kind of spiritual reflection.
